• Julian Robotnik, former warlord of the Kingdom of Acorn during the great war between the animal-like Mobians and the human-like Overlanders, turned traitor by banishing King Maximillian Acorn to a pocket dimension called the Zone of Silence, took over the city of Mobotropolis and began his reign with the help of his nephew, Snively.
• The children of the Royal Court—including those who would become the Knothole Freedom Fighters—escaped to Knothole.
• What remained of the army attempted to retake the city but were roboticized. The original group of Freedom Fighters put together then tried their luck, but were betrayed, roboticized and lost to the Zone of Silence.
• Sir Charles Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog's uncle, along with their dog, Muttski, was captured and roboticized.
• Years passed and the soon-grown-up Freedom Fighters began to make headway. Then they find something that may help them pull King Max out of the Zone of Silence…
